Leica

    Leica M9

For Leitz, since 1869 active in the field of for instance microscopes and later binoculars, Oscar Barnack developed a camera in 1914 that was extremely compact at the time, to be able to use 35mm film from the cinema industry. His concept gave photography a completely new twist. Suddenly a robust, lightweight travel camera was introduced that made it easy, fast and inconspicuous to shoot. In addition to photojournalism, this also gave medical and industrial photography a major boost, partly thanks to Leitz's flexibility and expertise in developing special accessories and lenses. Leitz offered a solution for every application, specially tailored if necessary.

    Leica M3

Due to the increasing specialisation in the fifties, the very minimalist design of the Leica Ur camera and its successors was improved with M39 threads. With the Leica M3, from 1954 Leitz offered a modern version of the classic bodies for the same target groups, with new M-bayonet, more comfort and possibilities. Later, the M2 was added and the new system even turned out to be so well thought-out that after several analog versions fifty years later it could develop further to high quality digital sister models.

    Leica DSLR

In the mid-sixties, the Leicaflex was complemented by a DSLR system that particularly appealed to photographers in need of telephoto lenses. Leica became a household name among nature photographers thanks to fantastic telephoto and macro lenses. Fifty years later, after popular models such as the SL2, R3, R4, R6 and a R9 with digital rear panel, Leica still delivers a reflex system but based on the S2, with a much larger sensor than its 'own' 35mm image.

Leica compact cameras and mirrorless cameras

From the manufacturer of high-quality microscopes, binoculars and a unique camera system, Leica has developed into a very versatile supplier. For amateur photographers with high demands there are several compact cameras such as the C, X2 and X Vario. There is a choice of several mirrorless cameras and lens modes: full frame (Leica M) or APS-C recording format (Leica T). And above that is the S2, the (DSLR) medium format camera for studio and fashion photography.

Leica T and new Leica M

Enthusiasts will recognise the analog M4, M4P and M6 in the new M mirrorless cameras. For the superior sensors, just as for the Leica T, new lenses were developed, although almost all existing Leica lenses can still be used. And after the Leicina film cameras in the sixties and seventies, today's film makers have Full HD video capacity of the Leica T and M mirrorless cameras and superior C Prime optics for the film industry at their disposal. Meanwhile, photojournalists are using Leica M cameras for video documentaries in sublime quality, completing the circle from film to photo to film a century later.
